Independent Elections organizes a meeting in Tafila on electoral laws and parties

Jihad al-Momani, a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent Electoral Commission, stressed that the commission seeks to achieve the visions and aspirations of His Majesty King Abdullah II and the government's directions to proceed with the process of political reform to reach the desired democracy within the framework of the new powers of the Commission, especially with regard to the follow-up of the affairs of political parties in addition to their role in the elections.
He added during a meeting organized by the Independent Commission at the headquarters of the All Jordan Youth Commission in Tafila today as part of an awareness campaign launched by it on the electoral and party laws, that the Independent Electoral Commission began an awareness campaign under the slogan "Solution is participation", which aims to enhance awareness of the system of political modernization and the laws emanating from it in terms of enhancing popular participation in the political process in general and the electoral process in particular.
In the presence of representatives of the party, youth, and popular sectors in Tafila, he pointed out that these meetings target the general electorate in general, new voters, youth, women, and electoral campaign partners in terms of the transfer of knowledge and information about the amendments contained in the electoral and parties laws, the developments of the law of parties, the procedures emanating from it and the future role assigned to parties.
He added that fundamental amendments included in the law of parties stressed the role assigned to young people to assume the responsibilities of the next stage, as young people are faced with a choice for their future and for Jordan, and this is achieved by active participation in political life, to reach a more beautiful Jordan where opportunities are equal, and where social justice is achieved, through party work and participation in elections.
Momani spoke about a package of provisions of the Parties and Elections Law, which referred to the rights of citizens to integrate into parties as a lever for young people to reach the House of Representatives, while the next House of Representatives will include about 41 party deputies out of 138 deputies whose percentage in the coming years will reach 100 percent, which will pave the way for access to parliamentary governments, pointing at the same time to the Law on Parties, which included provisions that will contribute to the creation of programmatic political parties in the interest of the homeland and the citizen, as the programmatic party He will remain on the party scene.
He pointed out that a group of parties have applied to correct their situation according to legal frameworks, while the new electoral law allowed young people the opportunity to run from the age of 25 years and above.
He pointed out that after the new amendments, the Independent Electoral Commission has become a hotbed of political reform within two important axes, the first is that party work is the basis, and the second is that election and participation in the electoral process is a national duty to reach those who represent us under the dome, just as the Commission is the supervisor of party affairs after the transfer of the party register from the Ministry of Political Development to it as a neutral body, especially in the matter and technical work from it, because registration will be in the Commission, which has become the home of political parties and a knowledge reference For all those wishing to join with a number of 300 members from at least six governorates.
He pointed out that the new law of parties will give people absolute freedom to join parties, as long as they adhere to the constitution and Jordanian law, and there is no longer any fear of joining them.
He pointed out that the Commission is currently studying the correction of the situation of political parties, where the deadline for correction and establishment began as of May 15, 2022, and will end on the evening of May 14, 2023, and there is sufficient time for parties in the process of correcting their status or merging among them up to one year and three months, indicating that there will be a party parliament during the next elections in 2024 if one of the parties meets the necessary conditions.
Al-Momani called on young people in universities and those who have reached the age of 18 to participate in parties, because they will be Jordanian interests and orientations and the interest of Jordan is the basis, knowing that the new law is developed, and for the first time in the next elections will be a national party list recognized by the law, and will constitute a third of the next parliament, i.e. 41 party people out of 138 deputies in parliament, and the law is amendable and developable, and will be amended after 2024 to increase the number of parties and their representatives in parliament until it reaches 60 Referring to the Commission's efforts in communicating with universities and through the campaign I participate in motivating university youth to join parties and participate in political life, just as working to find paths in schools and universities that include classes in civic education that are not systematic dealing with electoral laws and parties.
For his part, the coordinator of the Kulluna Jordan Youth Commission Siraj Al-Oran Branch said that this meeting came in order to spread awareness of the amendments included in the electoral laws and parties within the participatory adopted by the Commission with all relevant civil society institutions to reach the largest possible segment.
During the meeting, the participants discussed the provisions of the parties and elections laws and the conditions to be met by the parties that will correct their conditions, as well as the role assigned to the Commission in spreading awareness and education through all available means and tools, while Momani answered the questions of the participants in the meeting.
