Independent Election Commission launches Women's Empowerment Unit

The Independent Election Commission (IEC), in cooperation with UN Women, launched today the Women's  Empowerment Unit, on the sidelines of the specialized national workshop entitled "Women  in the Electoral Process", which aims to enrich the national dialogue on the concept of sensitive and supportive electoral administrations to enhance women's participation in elections and parties.

The workshop activities began in the opening session with a speech by the representative of UN Women residing in Jordan, Nicholas Borinat, through which he stressed the importance of the political  reforms undertaken by Jordan, especially in the women and youth sector, and that Jordan is one of the 41 countries in the world to carry out political reform. 

He added that EMBs have an important role to play in promoting women's participation and expressed all forms of support and cooperation with the Independent Election Commission to implement political reform. 
The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent Election Commission, Eng. Musa Al-Maaytah, said: The Independent Election Commission is the implementer of the laws governing the electoral process, and will not be the subject of controversy between the parties, the government, or any other party. 

Al-Maaytah also indicated that the Commission is concerned with developing women's participation in the electoral process and political parties, embodying the royal visions, through cooperation with partners and Jordanian state institutions in order to achieve the goals we want as the Jordanian people. 

Al-Maaytah also pointed out the importance of developing women's participation,training and qualifying them to reach parliament and  decision-making positions, address procedures, develop community culture, and empower and equal opportunities. 

Dr. Abeer Dababneh, a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent Election Commission, spoke about the Commission's vision towards institutionalizing work to empower women in elections andparties, where she stressed that the Independent Election Commission has taken serious steps in the field of empowering women politically, pointing to some of the real challenges facing women. 

Dababneh also reviewed the reality of women's participation in the parliamentary elections, in all its stages from 2013 to 2020, in addition to the  reality of women's participation in political parties, as she explained the tasks of the Women's Empowerment Unit in the Independent Election Commission. 

The first session, moderated by a member of the Commission's Board of Commissioners, Jihad Al-Momani, was dedicated to enhancing women's participation  in the elections, in which the Minister of  Social Development, Wafa Bani Mustafa, Dr. Nancy Namrouka, Minister of State for  Legal Affairs, Samar Hajj Hassan, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the National Center for Human Rights, and Suhair Abdeen, President of the Arab Network for Women in the elections, participated. 

In the second session, which focused on women's participation in political parties and was moderated by Ammar Al-Husseini, a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent Election Commission, where Dr.  Maysoon Al-Atoum, Dr. Muhammad Abu Rumman, Academic Advisor to the Institute of Politics  and Society, and Eng. Maha Al-Ali, Secretary-General of the National Committee for Women's Affairs, spoke.
