Center for Strategic Studies visits the Independent Election Commission
A delegation from the Center for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan visited the Independent Election Commission, as part of the "Our Resolution" project implemented by the Center in order to influence the processes of democratic change.
Member of the Board of Commissioners, Dr. Abeer Dababneh, reviewed the establishment of the commission, its independence, its management of the various electoral processes, its application of integrity guarantees, and the holding of elections with the highest levels of integrity and impartiality.
Dababneh indicated that the previous parliamentary elections 2020 were a milestone in the history of Jordanian democratic life and constituted a quantum leap in dealing with the democratic entitlement, despite the exceptional circumstances represented by the presence of the Corona virus pandemic. The Independent Election Commission played its role to the fullest and enhanced the citizen's confidence in the electoral process through simplifying the procedures of the electoral process in all its stages.
Dababneh also indicated that the Commission worked on adopting model polling stations to enable persons with disabilities to exercise their right to vote, providing accessibility requirements to a number of polling stations distributed to electoral districts, and using sign language in awareness and education campaigns.
In turn, Ammar Al-Husseini, a member of the Board of Commissioners, explained with numbers and stats the role of the Independent Election Commission in dealing with electoral violations, either by addressing them or transferring them to the authorities concerned through a committee formed for this purpose.
Al-Husseini also demonstrated with numbers and stats the importance of youth and women’s participation in the electoral process, whether it is a candidacy, election or volunteering. He also called for the need to strengthen this participation in the upcoming entitlements due to the significant role of the youth and women in political life and civil society institutions.
At the end of the meeting, an extensive discussion took place in which the delegates answered questions and inquiries from the audience.
